Community Care Day
May 2024
Nineteen of our wonderful employees here at Midlands Park Hotel recently donned gardening gloves and wellies to reduce Himalayan Balsam, an invasive plant species growing wild in Linear Park, Portlaoise.
A huge thank you to Laois Volunteer Centre who organised this day for us conjunction with Portlaoise Tidy Towns and Laois County Council.
Vanessa Langford, our Marketing Manager here at the hotel said It was the first time that the hotel undertook a corporate volunteer day for the staff and it proved extremely successful. “We had a most enjoyable day,” she said “and it gave our team a great boost to be able help the local community in some way. A lot of local people use the hotel and it was a nice way for us to give back something back to the town.
‘Greener Together’ Project Launch

A new project dedicated to creating a greener environment in Laois which is the first of its kind in the region, has been launched by Laois County Council. The ‘Greener Together’ initiative is a pioneering monthly newsletter dedicated to supporting the Portlaoise Low Carbon Town Project (PLCTP) and fostering collaboration between public and private organizations committed to sustainability.
The launch event saw attendance from various local organizations committed to sustainability. Laois Volunteers, known for organising CSR events for local businesses, were among the prominent attendees. Other notable participants included IPS, HSE, Laois Chamber Alliance, Greenfield Global, Mochua Print, the Department of Agriculture and the Midlands Park Hotel, each showcasing their ongoing sustainability efforts and initiatives.
TY Students Collaboration
We are thrilled to collaborate with the talented Transition Year students from St. Mary’s CBS, Portlaoise, on an inspiring project that bridges education, sustainability, and community engagement.
The students are diligently cultivating a variety of fresh herbs and vegetables, including peas, rosemary, thyme, chives, lettuce, and tomatoes, which will feature in the dishes served at Midlands Park Hotel. This initiative not only promotes farm-to-table dining but also highlights the importance of working with our local community to create sustainable and impactful practices.
In addition to growing produce, the students are crafting bird boxes and enchanting fairy doors, which will adorn the trees around the hotel, adding a unique and imaginative touch to our surroundings.
A special thanks to Miss Stephanie Redmond, Irish Teacher, and Mr. Enda Mooney, Woodwork Teacher, for their enthusiasm and guidance in bringing this partnership to life. Their dedication ensures the success of this meaningful project.
We eagerly await the final results and are proud to support the creativity and hard work of these students while strengthening our connection with the local community.
