We recognise that Midlands Park Hotel has an important part to play in doing our part to protect the environment and reducing our carbon footprint as much as possible. Protecting our landscape and environment is extremely important to us and that is why we have formed a green team to ensure carbon reducing policies and practices are introduced and implemented throughout the hotel, without impacting the guest experience.

Sustainability at Midlands Park Hotel

Sustainability is one of the defining issues of our time with wide-ranging implications for society and for every sector of our economy. In addressing today’s environmental challenges, we all have a responsibility to minimise our impact on the natural environment. Active engagement with employees and suppliers is key, as is good communication with customers, many of whom are increasingly alert to issues around sustainable tourism and the need to safeguard the environment. Embracing sustainability is key to the future success of our industry.

Midlands Park Hotel Management and Staff are fully committed to a comprehensive Environmental Policy, which includes effective waste management and responsible practices to reduce electricity, gas and water consumption. We care deeply for the environment and we are constantly introducing environmentally friendly changes to help play our part in protecting our environment.

Our efforts already in place in reducing carbon footprint at Midlands Park Hotel:

• We have recently installed two electric car charging points in the car park of the hotel to assist our electric driving guests throughout their stay.
• LED lights are now in place throughout the hotel.
• Biodegradable pens are in use in all meeting rooms and bedrooms.
• Fully compostable cups are in use throughout the hotel for take away hot drinks.
• We will be removing single use sachets for sauce in our restaurants and reintroducing ramekins.
• Food waste is monitored closely to see how we can reduce this on an ongoing basis.
• We have a user-friendly waste management process in place.
• We have introduced pump dispensers in all bathrooms for body wash and shampoo instead of using single use bottles.
• An introduction of SMARTFLOW – a water monitor that can track where the high and low usage is coming from and detects any leaks so they can be resolved as soon as possible.
• We ask that our guests only leave towels on the floor if they want them to be laundered, this saves on a lot of towels being washed unnecessarily.
• Where possible we source our food produce locally, all fruit and veg sourced from Browns across the road, reducing our carbon footprint by reducing distance delivery vehicles need to travel to reach us.
• All coffee and tea is sustainably sourced from a fairtrade company being Java.
• Bike to work scheme offered to staff to reduce carbon emissions by cycling instead of driving.
• Digital key card access to bedrooms and meeting rooms.
• Tablets used for ordering in restaurant outlets to reduce paper waste.
• We purchased a pool cover to retain heat and water in our swimming pool.
• Successful installation of solar panels on the roof of our Health & Fitness Club.

The 4 star Midlands Park Hotel commits to measuring waste consumption every month and implement the following initiatives to reduce consumption:

• Adopt a reduce, reuse, recycle policy throughout the property.
• We work with our suppliers on a continuous basis to reduce packaging.
• Educate staff in relation to recycling and aim to do the same with our guests.
• We strive to compost and recycle as much as possible.

We have a very thorough waste management system in Midlands Park Hotel. When new team members join the hotel there is a waste management section to educate new employees on the correct procedures within the hotel. Our accommodation team ensure all waste from our guest bedrooms is segregated and is disposed of in the correct bins.

The 4 Star Midlands Park Hotel continuously strives to decrease our footprint on the environment.

We are delighted to recognise that “going green” doesn’t mean giving up on all luxury amenities. However, it does mean keeping a very close eye on our energy use, with regular monitoring and measurement we can make the necessary adaptations to keep in line with our sustainability goals.

We are currently using Pinergy as our electricity provider. They pride themselves on using 100% renewable sourced energy. We closely monitor and benchmark our energy usage on a monthly basis and see if there are ways we can reduce consumption month on month and year on year.

Our energy management strategy is part of a broader commitment to sustainability that includes waste reduction, water conservation and eco-friendly practices across all aspects of the hotel.

Our Bug Hotel

At Midlands Park Hotel our bug hotel is a sanctuary for insects and other small creatures. This eco-friendly haven provides a vital habitat, supporting biodiversity and promoting a healthy ecosystem. Bug hotels are crucial in conserving beneficial insects, many of which play significant roles in pollination and decomposition. These creatures help maintain soil health, promote plant growth, and contribute to a healthier environment.

By offering shelter and nesting sites, we help maintain the natural balance and health of our environment. By creating a habitat where they can thrive, we are helping to protect these important species. Our Bug Hotel was thoughtfully designed using a variety of natural materials, ensuring it attracts a wide range of species.

Through our commitment to sustainability, we hope to inspire others to take small actions in their own gardens and communities to support wildlife and protect natural habitats.

At the 4 star Midlands Park Hotel, our environment literally means the world to us, however sustainability does not only encompass planting trees and reducing emissions.

At Midlands Park Hotel, we are dedicated to promoting our hotel in a way that is honest, transparent and mindful of the impact our marketing has on our guests, the community and the environment. We believe in marketing with integrity, ensuring that all our communication accurately reflects the experiences and services we offer. Our commitment to honest and mindful marketing reflects our belief in building long-lasting relationships with our guests. At Midlands Park Hotel, we stand by our values, ensuring that every message we share is guided by integrity, care and consideration.

Midlands Park Hotel were using on average 60,000 litres of water a day and we believed that we had no underlying water issues. We were receiving quarterly water bills but we had no way to validate if the usage and cost were correct. Physical checks of the building indicated there were no water issues. SMART FLOW was selected to assist with water validation and detect any future water issues within the premises.

Once SMARTFLOW was installed it detected a major leak in the Health Club. It was difficult to locate the root of the leak, turning off different access points in stages. A major leak was then identified, and the issue has been rectified.

The water usage has been reduced from 75,000 litres/day down to 15,000 litres/day. This will result in a saving of around €54,000/year.

• We are committed to conserving water and measure usage on a monthly basis.
• We communicate with our guests and staff members on ways to conserve water, such as reusing towels and avoiding unnecessary laundering during a stay.
• We use environmentally friendly washing and cleaning products throughout Midlands Park Hotel.
• All single use plastics have been removed from the hotel where possible and we have installed guest water fountains on each floor.

We are working towards installing solar panels to reserve energy in the building. We want to be the most environmentally friendly hotel in Ireland by 2025.

Energy

• To reduce our Energy consumption by 30% in 2025 over 2019 and reduce Carbon Emissions by 450 Tonnes.

Water

• To reduce consumption of Mains Water by 40% in 2025 over 2019 which will be the equivalent of 12,000 cubic meters or 12,000,000 litres of water.

Waste

• Training of Staff on correct segregation of waste and to reduce the waste we send to landfill by 25 Tonnes by 2025 over 2019 figures.

Green Purchasing

• To engage with our suppliers to reduce packaging by 20% over 2019 figures.
• To increase usage of recycled paper products to 75% of all paper/cardboard purchased.

Community Social Responsibility

• To support a local school in their Green Flag Environmental Activities
• To engage in a local “Clean Up” at least once a year in conjunction with the Tidy Towns Competition
• To communicate monthly our performance and achievements through the hotel website.
